Axilspot Hogfish

Bodianus axillaris

Adults (TP): each with an eyespot at the pectoral fin base (“shoulder”) and back of dorsal and anal fin.

Size : 20 cm

Habitat : Clear lagoons, bays and outreefs, 3-40 m. Swims alone and close to the bottom. Adults and juveniles occasionally work as cleanerfish.

Distribution : Red Sea, East Africa and S Oman to S Japan, Micronesia, French Polynesia and Pitcairn.
