Highfin Grouper

Epinephelus maculatus

Brownish, entire body and fins speckled with dark spots. Two white patches on the back.

Size : 60 cm

Habitat : In bays, lagoons and out reefs, 3-100 m. Juveniles also especially common or rubble, between stones and in sandy, muddy areas in shallow water. Adult often rest on open sand surfaces. It captures fish and crustaceans as well as octopuses.

Distribution : Cocos Keeling to SW Japan, Micronesia and Samoa.
